  • Toronto councillor: dead cyclists have themselves to blame!

Unbelievable...  We have so far to go when our elected  officials think like this guy:  From  BoingBoing post:

Joey "AccordionGuy" deVilla reports on the single dumbest thing I've ever heard of an elected city official saying. Toronto councillor Rob Ford told the Toronto Star: "I can't support bike lanes. Roads are built for buses, cars, and trucks. My heart bleeds when someone gets killed, but it's their own fault at the end of the day."
  • Magic of Freeride

This google video called "Magic of Freeride" is out of this world.  I just can't believe this guy's still in one piece.  Thank god for shocks.

  • CycleBetter.Com Feed Changes

You may or may not have noticed, but they CycleBetter.Com site hosts two different kinds of blogs. 1) Those that originate here (and are published here first).  These blogs are really the heart and soul of CycleBetter:

    Peter Van Ooijen's Fiets
Grant Killian's The G-Rant : Grant's Rants on Adventure Racing
    Bill Butler's Against The Wind

The second type of blog we feature are those that are published elsewhere, and are re-posted here.  These great cycling blogs are what makes us a good site to visit daily.  In the past, we've syndicated the entire posts, but we're changing that.  From now on, we're going to syndicate only excerpts of the full posts.  This has some major benefits for us (we should do much better on Google in digest mode) and we'll be able to bring more blogs online very soon.

    Thanks for reading!

  • 100 MPH Downhill?

This Japanese video shows some guys going downhill and crashing at around 100 MPH.  Not excactly an example of Cycling Better, I'll be the first to admit, but it's hard not to look..

  • Why Join a Blog Network?

There’s a good post over at ProBlogger.Com on blog networks:

Why Should you Join a Blog Network?

After posting yesterday a basic Introduction to Blog networks I now want to turn my attention to some of the positives about joining a blog network as a blogger (the negatives will come in the next post in the series). Please note that I’m not writing about the benefits of starting or owning a blog network but looking at the positives of joining an existing one as a blogger. Of course the following factors will apply more to some networks than others (each network has it’s own configuration).

CycleBetter.Com is a blog network of cycling blogs!

  • What's Going on At CycleBetter.Com?

You may have noticed some big changes around here lately.  We have a new look, a new version of our server software, and LOTS of new blogs being added every day. What’s going on, you may ask?

    Lot’s O’ New Blogs

The biggest change around here is we’re finally getting serious about signing up new blogs.  We’ve been contacting great bloggers in different areas, like MTB, Road Racing, etc. and seeing if they want to cross-post content here.   We’ve had some really great bloggers accept, and we’re thrilled! Check out Confessions of a Manic Cyclist, Fatmarc - home of the spot brand whore, and Carl Buchanan - Mountain Bike Racer.. All three have been added this week!

    Feed Categories

You may have also noticed that we’ve added feed categories.  This is going to allow you to subscribe to just the feeds you care about.. If you’re into MTB racing and riding, you can subscribe to our Mountain Biking feed, for example and you don’t have to skip through stuff you may not be as interested in   Currently we’re providing the following feeds:
Very soon, my humble hope is that we’ll become the place to subscribe to the best biking feeds in the world.

    What’s the Goal of CycleBetter.Com?

Well, first let me tell you who I am.  I'm a long time cyclist and bike mechanic.  In my college years, I managed a small bike shop in Gainesville, FL called Recycled Bikes.  I've always been interested in all aspects of cycling. I'm now a software developer and in my spare time, play around with creating blog communities.  I've set up one very successful community at http://www.codebetter.com .  We have about 5,000 + subscriptions over at bloglines, and it's an active thriving community.

The key to its success has been providing multiple, focused blogs.  There's a synergy that happens when you get a bunch of like minded bloggers reading and blogging at the same place.  It can be quite fun..  It's also a nice way to provide one feed that people can subscribe to, and get a bunch of good blogs.

So, with CycleBetter, I'm attempting to do the same - create a thriving community around cycling.  You will see some ads on the site, which is a necessary evil I guess. Ultimately, I'd love to actually turn this in to a business of some sort, but for now, my immediate goal is to simply have it support itself, and pay for it's hosting.

    Thanks for stopping by!

  • Welcom Rob & Tim...

In the past few weeks, we've signed up two new bloggers here at CycleBetter.Com.

Rob Tripp - Rob happens to be the father of my child.  :)  Seriously though, he is my stepson's father, serious cyclist and an all around good guy.  He's had a blog up on blogspot for a couple of months, and it's a really good blog!  Glad to have him over here.

Tim White is a long time blogger, who I've convinced to cross post over here on CycleBetter.  You can check out his other blog, which is on blogspot as well.  Be sure to check out the arcives, he's got some great writing over there.

  • Welcome to CycleBetter.Com

    Focused Feed Blogging

CycleBetter.Com is a Focused Feed blogging site.  What's  a Focused Feed site, you ask?  It's an entire site focused on one area of interest that  strives to keep a clean main feed.  By focused, I mean that we try not to talk about things unrelated to the topic at hand.  This aspect of CycleBetter is the main differentiator for this blog site, among a sea of web sites around cycling.

What does this mean to you?

The main feed for CycleBetter.Com is going to be a focused feed around cycling.  We don't charge for blogs here at CycleBetter.Com, but there's a catch - we're only going to offer blogs to those with a passion, a knowledge, and a commitment to focused blogging around cycling.   This means that you can subscribe to our main feed using bloglines, newsgator, or by simply visiting our home page, and you'll get one thing - great blogging related to cycling.

Thanks and welcome to our community!

    -Brendan
  • CycleBetter.Com Mission Statement

CycleBetter.Com exists in order to help foster community and an awareness of superior technoloy and techniques within the cycling community.  We do this by providing cyclists of all levels a place to teach and learn about cycling through blog and forum posts, articles, photos and equipment reviews.

As content providers, we hope to publish precise and knowledgeable information, and guide conversations by sharing our personal experiences learning about and acually going out and riding. We strive to keep our content focused on cycling and only produce as much new content daily as a reader can read in detail in single sitting.

We are focused on building up activities, as opposed to tearing down activities.  Tearing down activities involve finding faults with and pointing out shortcomings.   Building up activates involve showing what works, rather than what doesn't.

We hope that you will find valuable content at CycleBetter.Com and that what you find here will help cycle better.

  • CycleBetter.Com FAQ

    Can I have a blog at CycleBetter.Com?

At the time of this writing, CycleBetter.Com is offering blogging accounts, however, we’re trying very hard to remain small and focused, with only as much new daily content that a person can read in sitting.  Because of this, we’re deliberately keeping our membership low.

Aren’t you guys just being elitist jerks?

Hopefully, if you’ve read this far, you understand what we’re tying to do by remaining small and focused.

So what makes you guys think you know so much, you elitist jerks?

We’re constantly learning ourselves.  What makes CycleBetter.Com a good dependable place for accurate information is you, the community.  The more you read and respond in comments and discussion posts, the better.

So how do I know I can trust what I read here?

We’re trying to share what we’ve learned, which will hopefully be a starting point for discussion and exploration.  Don’t take our word for it, and don’t practice anything without first thinking about, researching and testing the ideas you find here.

What are the benefits of registration?

Registration on CodeBetter.Com grants you particular permissions, specifically on our forums.  It also helps us maintain a membership database that we can use to contact you if we need to.

So will you sell my email address or spam me?

Absolutely not.  We won’t even send you any mass e-mailings, since we don’t really like receiving those things ourselves.
