  • 24 hours of Afton - quick update

I will get everything typed up sometime today or tomorrow. The race was absolutely amazing with , at last count, 73 solo racers signing up. 600' of climbing per lap, amazing trails, fast sections, techy sections, rock gardens, it was awesome. It was a battle all the way to the end for me with one other rider. I ended the race with 17 laps which was enough for 2nd place overall. Kerkove won it of Technorati Tags:
  • 24 more

Cars all packed for the trip to Minnesota and the 24 Hours of Afton. Breakfast at Perkin's at 7am with Jeff and my father and then the trip begins. Race starts at 5pm Friday afternoon which means everyone should be pretty fresh for the night time laps. Although that means that it's going to be a long one from sunrise to finish line at 5pm Saturday. Sounds like the opportunity may rise to roll Technorati Tags:
  • Cannondale Rush - Long(er) term review

I have spent the summer riding and racing aboard a pair of Cannondale Rush 2000 bicycles which equates to eight months, two 12 hour races, one 24 hour race, and two more 24 hour races yet to do. Ilooked back…

  • Weekend recap

Left for Madison, WI on Friday morning to spend a couple of days at a dealer trade show and get the scope on the 2007 product. Being that 'Sales' is my primary responsiblilty at the shop I like to have an in-depth understanding of what is available to us and them.
My primary objective was to attend sales and marketing seminars to acquire some ideas of how the shop can update things to better serve our customers. I think that I came away with a lot of good ideas that hopefully will be seen at the shop in the next few months. Other areas of interest for me were things such as website building tools, bike-fitting, the new Shimano XTR controls, SRAM Force controls, and a few other components such as handlebars, cranks, and wheelsets. I need a wider set of bars on my road bike and always dig looking at wheels.
I bumped into a couple of friends such as Pappa Vinnie, Dirtram, Sean, and a few new people that I met through these friends. Others that I saw but did not speak with included Gary Fisher in this way pimp suit and Bob Roll typing on a computer with one finger. I was really hoping to meet these two but it was not to happen this time. All in all it was a good time with great people and great food to boot.

  • Road Trip

Pretty low-key week with not a lot of excitement in these parts. Did a 30 mile spin on Wednesday to get the legs happy and then my ride was washed out yesterday due to the rain. The shop was crazy last night causing Joel and I to stay until 9:30pm finishing up a couple of sales. Yea, we close at 8:00pm. I will be out of town on "business" for a couple of days so no posts from me. I will be back on Saturday afternoon/night some time so I will probably ride Sunday morning and get a post out then.

  • Feel It!!!!!!!!!!

Spent yesterday morning and early afternoon working at the shop with Guitar Ted, I have concluded that he is the one that keeps me sane and in control. Ted has been giving me pointers on wheel-building techniques and the elements that make the build a success. Yesterday Ted helped me understand proper wheel tension and the tensions that are used to build a strong wheel. I like to have a fairly thorough understanding of how and why things work before I attempt building them and Ted has definitely helped me with all of that. Thanks Buddy!

Last night was the group road ride and probably one of the last ones for me due to working at the shop during the evenings effective today. Since I probably won’t be out again, my goal last night was to not get shelled and be one of the guys doing the shelling. The group started out with ten riders including: Kisch, J.Fry, Krueger, Eilderts, Robondo, B. Allen, Boller, Houlihan, Kerkove, and me. Let’s see…that translates to…

    3 Specializeds
    2 Waterfords
    1 Trek
    1 Giordana
    1 Giant
    1 Cannondale
    1 Salsa
    Hmmm…interesting

Anyway, Allen and I led out of town and although we were only rolling at around 20mph, the two of us ended up with a very large gap before we were even out of town. We picked the pace up a bit to make everyone work a little and the next thing you know the group was in shambles. The paceline was cruising up Union Rd. in the high 20’s with most everyone taking good pulls. Krueger had just ran a marathon this last weekend so he sat in quite bit, but he had a god excuse. We had a couple of close ones when a construction truck and trailer went by without giving us any room and a little while late a large pickup passed us while we were cresting a hill and there was another cyclist coming the other way. Yea…that could have been ugly. No major attacks in the first section and but only eight riders made it to Finchford where Kisch flatted and the group decided to wait for him to change it. After the flat was fixed we proceeded on and the attacks began almost right away. I told myself in the beginning that I was not going for sprints but I was going to try an attack or too. Coming up on the first sprint sign, I was on the front pulling at around 26mph and upped the pace to about 29mph when Eilderts came around and went for the sign. He took it uncontested to my surprise. We made the right hander and then Kerkove, J. Fry, and Kisch went for the second sign. It looked pretty close to me but I do believe that Kisch took it at the line. His timing is impeccable and I do not recall ever beating him myself.

Cruised through town at a slightly lower speed to let everyone regroup and then the second half really picks up. The first part is about a four or five mile stretch of small rollers with a sprint at the end. The pace started out pretty calm at around 23 mph and stayed like that until the halfway point where it climbed up to the high 20’s. Kerkove &
Kisch launched a small attack to see how others reacted but everyone stayed on. The sprint was contested by Kisch, J.Fry, and Kerkove I believe…not totally sure…but I am sure that Kisch took it as usual. We made the turn to head south along Joplin Dr./Wagner Rd. which is usually the section that I get shelled on during the nights when I have been shelled. Although, I have been staying on all the way to Waterloo for the last few weeks so I must be getting a little faster by riding with these guys. There are sprint signs at the halfway point and end of this road and the road is around eight miles long I think. I did my fair share of pulls to the first sign, let everyone else fight out the sign, and then proceeded up the largest hill of the road which is where I usually fall off. I followed Kerkove to the top making sure that I stayed with him and reserved some energy. At the top I launched my own attack and was able to stay off of the front for the next two hills before the group caught me on the downside. Shortly after I was caught, J. Fry launched his own attack and the group paced themselves to catch him shortly before the last sprint sign. We caught him a bit early and then Kisch, Krueger, J. Fry, and Eilderts fought for the last sprint of the night. It was too close for me to call but I would put my money on Kisch.

It was a great ride and I was totally stoked to do as much of the pace making as I did. Most of these guys at the group ride are Cat. 2 and 3 roadies and over this summer I have worked my way in to being able to hang with them. Even if I am not contesting signs it is still comforting to know that these rides have been helping me get faster. Right now I am fast but without the 's'. If I do not get out again this year I will definitely be looking for a way to guarantee my participation next summer…hopefully with one of these or these. Must find a way...

There was a small package in the mail yesterday at the shop yesterday that contained these.
    Ergon (1)
    Ergon (2)
    Ergon
A pair of green ones for Rush #1 and a pair of black ones for Rush #2. Ergon grips are one of the most comfortable things I have ever used on any of my mountain bikes. They are simply amazing. Be sure you check out G-Ted's review of them here. Should be able to give them a test run on Sunday and get them dialed in for the climbing at the 24 Hours of Afton on the 25th. Happy hands, happy hands, happy hands!!!

I am off for a recovery spin and then to the shop at 3pm to work with my buddy A. Lo.

  • Lost my mojo

Worked at the shop on Saturday selling light after light after light in preparation for the Cedar Valley Trail Festival night ride that evening. Seriously, we sold A LOT of lights. I did not participate in the ride itself but I rode down to the trail with Amy and my parents and we watched all of the people ride by. Lots of people with glow stick and such all over their bikes to make them stick out. Some interesting observations include the mass amounts of seatposts that are too high or low, lack of helmets, low air pressure in tires, and others. Crazy stuff I tell ya.

Sunday was a most adventuroud day really. First thing on tap was a gravel ride to Camp Ingawanis with Houlihan and Kerkove. I just wasn't quite feeling it on the way up but figured things would come around when we arrived at camp. During the first lap I found myself off the back a few times and that was a bit frustrating considering how great I was feeling on Thursday night. We decided to hit up another lap before taking off which turned out to be more than I needed. My timing was a little off through a set of turns and I ended up kissing a small tree. Nothing major but definately a sign that my MTB mojo was not in it during the ride. Cruised the gravel back to Waterloo watching Houlihan and Kerkove fight out the sprints. Pretty good entertainment!!

After I was showered, Amy and I made our way to Target to look at some "baby stuff", doing that more and more lately. Didn't find anything there so we made our way to "Sprawl-Mart...land of inconsiderates". I actually had a lady run into me with her shoulder while going through the dairy section and she said nothing to me. I hate that store. We finished up with our things and then headed home where I was sitting on the couch when there was a loud crashing noise outside. Turned around to look out the window and saw a minivan had rear-ended a SUV and there was a kid, about 12-13 years old actually getting out of the van while it was still rolling. I quickly made my way outside to make sure everyone was okay and see if any of them needed attention. Everyone seemed okay except that the driver of the van was still a little surprised at what happened and she was a little scared which was understandable. Once we had everything under control, one of my neighbors and I directed traffic until the police arrived. It was pretty crazy for about an hour or so but not a huge deal. I am definately glad that I feel calm in these types of situations because it seems that a lot of people either don't know what to do or don't want to get involved. I hope everything turns out okay for all of them.

After everything was cleared up by the PD and FD we went to my parents' house for lasagna dinner...oh yea. Delicious!! Man do I love pasta.

Today was an easy 30 mile spin with Kerkove to get the legs back to their snappy feeling in prepartaion for tomorrow night's group ride. For some reason it will be my last group ride before the 24 Hours of Afton, weird how that works. Kisch says that I need to get my schedule fixed so that I don't miss so many rides. What to do, what to do.

  • I'm in

I just received my confirmation of registration for the 24 Hours of Afton this month, I am the 70th registrant in the solo field. It's going to be a good one boys and girls. :)

Easy spin this morning to get the legs all happy and stuff. Just cruised around on the bike trail with Rush 1 for about an hour or so, nothing to exciting. I have Sunday off from the shop so I will probably go for a ride in the am but not sure exactly what type or where just yet.

I forgot to mention yesterday that I made a minor tweak on my road bike saddle that made a huge difference in my comfort. 2mm forward and an ever so slight upward tilt made me super happy. I bring this up because it seems like so many people look at me like I am crazy when I tell them that a 1mm change here and there can make the difference between a 30 minute ride and a 24 hour ride. Imagine...24 hours on a bike...without too much pain. No discomfort pain that is.

  • Gettin' that snappy feeling back

My knee that had the flesh removed is feeling and looking really good right outside of the fact that the bone on the right side is bruised. It only hurts if I twist just right so no real worries. Yesterday I rode up to Janesville and back just for the spin with no hills. 26.5 miles at a fairly comfy pace outside of working into the wind all the way home. There were sections that got pretty windy where there was no break created by the trees. Good ride overall.

Today I spent the morning at the shop hanging out with G-Ted. Today's conversation consisted mostly of past race stories and comparisons of the different courses that we have both raced on in the state of Minnesota. G-Ted has got some great stories about his racing days and his past shop stories are pretty rockin' too.

Off work at 2pm, went home to chill out before the group ride but couldn't relax for whatever reason. Started suiting up and remembered that my rear wheel needed a bit of care so it was a quick ride to the shop to put the spoke wrench to it and then rolled down to the group ride. Have not been there for about three weeks so everyone wants to know where I have been and such. It's always nice to be missed. :) Six other riders made their appearance tonight including R. Fry, J. Fry, Fox, Doug, Kisch, and Engstrom. Started rolling out of town to head north to Finchford and Janesville when Kisch asked me how I was feeling tonight. I was a bit surprised by this but said that I had enough for maybe a sprint or two. He said that was cool and we started to pick up the pace. I did not see the speedo go below 25mph all the way to Finchford. Heck, when we made the left turn to head to Finchford I decided to pull a page from the "Kerkove Diaries" and launched an attack. Kisch was the only one to go with me and we rode all the way to Finchford at around 30-32mph before letting up at the park. Engstrom then pulled up Three-Tier hill before Doug and J.Fry attacked towards the top. I felt good so I went with them too. We came to a full stop at the pothole infested bridge because it was closed which was a surprise to me. We all walked around the barriers like good little citizens and continued with our ride. Shortly there after Doug attacked and of course I went with him. I was no where near close to him by the sprint but J. Fry attacked right after that and I busted butt to pull Kisch back up to J. Fry and Kisch took the next sprint.

By the time we arrived in Janesvill, J. Fry and I were both off the back and cruising through town. We had to TT back to the group as they left Janesville but luckily Kisch sat up and waited for us and then pulled us back. Dude is crazy fast and has tons of energy. All hell broke lose as we headed south back to Waterloo though. The pace just kept going up until it was bouncing off the mid-30's. I launched one more attack and was away alone for what seemed like forever before Kisch caught up and then the two of us held off the group for a while before coming back into Waterloo.

Awesome ride which turned into intervals for me. Launch an attack, get shelled, catch up, launch an attack, repeat as needed. Totally had a good time. My legs feel really snappy right now and I am looking forward to the 24 Hours of Afton on the 25th and 26th. Speaking of which, I have still not received notification that they have received my entry fee. Hopefully I will get that tomorrow...waiting is making me nervous. I think that I hang out with Kerkove too much. Just kidding buddy!!!!

Easy spin tomorrow morning, weather permitting, and then working the afternoon/night shift at the shop.

  • Rearranging

Today I took the opportunity to rearrange a few things in my "bike room". Yes I actually have a room in my basement that contains all of my bicycles and all of the related cycling equipment. Over the last few months things have expanded to the point that bicycles were sitting in the hallway so I needed to get a bit of organization done. Everything is much better now, at least everything fits back in the room and I can easily move around so all is good and happy. There are still a few things that I would like to do to really put things where they belong but that will be another day. During this rearranging process I came acrossed some decals that my wife had purchased for me a few months ago and decided that I should probably get them put on. Here are a couple of pictures to show you the results. I'm digging it and everyone will know that this bike is mine, that's for sure.

  • Rocky roooooad

Gravel grinder to the New Hartford hills area today with Kerkove. It seems like forever ago since I last rode on the gravel. The roads don't even look the same with 6+ foot high corn in the fields. During the winter and spring rides you can see for miles in every direction but now all you can see is straight ahead and straight back. The seasons are a great thing I believe. New Hartford hills will probably be my training groundss for the month of August in preparation for the upcoming 24 Hours of Afton. Climb, climb, and climb some more.

We were expecting to ride with the pack of doggies in the area but they never showed up. Too bad really, they help to up the intensity. I do believe that the winds were out of the NW as we headed west and that they switched to the NE as we headed back east, but I could have been hallucinating too, who knows. My legs felt like lead bricks for the forst 45 minutes or so. Seemed like even the down hill sections were a chore at times. They feel really good right now though. Sitting in my office with my legs on the desk and surfing the web.

Total chaos at the shop this past weekend to the point that I had to call in reinforcements. People were getting impatient and upset that they weren't getting service from the second that they walked in the door. Nevermind the fact that there were ten people here before you who are all waiting their turn all nice and calm. Overall it wasn't terrible, just a few bad apples to spoil the bunch. We are already running low on certain models of bikes and it is only the first week of August. Lot of nice weather still left in the season so I hope that we can deliver all of the needed hardware to our local community. If next weekend's weather is like this weekend's was than we could be in for some exciting times. This weekend is our local Cedar Valley Trails festival where everyone in town who owns a bicycle is out and about while those that do not have bikes come out of their holes and buy them. Could be interesting, and entertaining, at the same time. Yippee.

The local Road Time Trials will start again for the fall series on Wedbesday August 23rd. It's only a buck so come out and give it a go. Meets at the corner of 27th Street and Union Road in Cedar Falls at 6:00pm. First rider goes off at 6:30pm. The course is 10 miles long (5 out and 5 back)and consists of gentle rollers for the most part. The overall record stands at 21:50 has was set 16 years ago by local speed demon Super Dave Krueger who is still the local fast guy today. I have seen one guy get pretty close to breaking it a couple years ago...can you Feel It?

  • Why not a wishbone?

Coin flipping to see who gets to ride a Rush Carbon, eh? (See comments from yesterday's post) We have back to back 24 Hour races so we could just split the time on the Carbon Rush. We could do like a 2 week demo ride/test of the product.

Of course if that won't work how about I ride one of these instead?

I'd roll it. I really would. Wouldn't mind one bit. Really. You wouldn't have to twist my arm. Think of it as some real world R&D.

Have a most happy day. Technorati Tags:
