No Clipless Pedals for Me This Year
This is a sadder but wiser update of my 2006 post: Why I don’t use Clipless Pedals. I am back to Power Grips this year. I don’t know it for sure but I feel that using Clipless Pedals in 2006 contributed to the hip problem that have kept me off of my bicycle for the last year. [...]

Odd Bicycling News
I am sad to say this site appears to have died since I wrote this article. I can understand it must have been a lot of work. But it is still worth brosing for the oddities. Looking for news about bicyclists, try Bicycling in the News = BitN. I am not usually a fan of this kind [...]

Repairing Flat Bicycle Tires on the Road
I know tire repair sounds pretty basic but tire repair is a key skill for anyone who rides a bicycle more than walking distance from their home or car. I have had lots of tire repair experience and learned what I know the hard way, sitting on the ground in the rain with a flat. [...]

Adjusting the Rear Derailleur
It is time to be thinking about getting my bikes ready for Spring Riding in New Hampshire, if it was a little warmer I’d actually be getting them ready. I know I am behind most other folks, but let’s see if I can catch up by doing it better and smarter this year. As I work [...]

Finding a Parking Place for your Car while Bicycle Touring

Why I always wear a bicycle helmet
I don’t bicycle without a helmet. That logic has been reinforced for me several times. The more you ride the more you become aware of what can happen at almost any time, you can fall. I have fallen when my wheel gets stuck in sand, when a turn is covered by wet manure, when a pedestrian [...]

Knee Savers/Pedal Extenders
I have been thinking about Knee Savers/Pedal Extenders for quite a while but the price always put me off. My industrially sized sandals tend to rub against the crank arms and a little more pedal clearance should be a good thing. I am not so sure about the Knee Saver claim but I know other Recumbent [...]

Crossing the Canadian Border on a Bicycle
The Route I have been laying out crosses the border from the US into Canada and returns. So what do I need to do to be prepared for that crossing? I have crossed the US-Canadian Border on a bicycle in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and New York and it has always been uneventful. With the [...]

We have a route concept and rough idea where we would like to spend the nights, Chambly and Saint Jean sur Richelieu. Using the Lake Champlain Bikeways Maps and Cycling in Quebec, I have laid out a preliminary one way route using Google Maps. This first cut at a route has some problems: 1. [...]
