The G-Rant : Grant's Rants on Adventure Racing

“Without adventure, civilization is in full decay.” - Alfred North Whitehead

The STORM has passed

Our 2005 race year came to a close this past weekend; the STORM the Eastern Shore Adventure Race was a challenging course and I suspect the participants got more than they bargained for.  On paper, the Eastern Shore of Virginia can look bland by adventure racing standards but I think we really made the most of the area.  We really worked our tales off to make the race happen and, along with the help of some terrific weather, the event was a success as measured by all the smiles on the racers' faces (along with the mud and sweat).  We have some amazing pictures to share and race data to crunch (time splits etc), so stay tuned for more soon.  We also really need to finalize some things for 2006 in terms of any races we're planning to put together.

For me personally, I'm excited to change gears and focus on racing again instead of organizing.  Team HRAdventure has a race coming up in January in the Georgia mountains; 30-hours of elevation and cold . . . strangely, I'm really looking forward to it

Thanks Eric, glad you had fun. Your team raced really well, particularly on Saturday. Too bad about that cell phone, but we'll still get you the race credit since there were no stipulations about it being operational!

This was my 3rd race and the first time i've come away and immediately start planning for another one. i usually spend the following week swearing off adventure racing forever. So thanks for the great time! If i was able to lift my arms above my head i would offer you and your volunteers a high 5 for all of your hard work. As it stands, my shoulders are still on strike from sunday. Richmond is ready and waiting for an adventure...can't wait to see what we can do!

Thanks Camille, it was fun watching another Team BRMS tackle the course. I never thought of whiskey would be mandatory gear (even though it was Robert's)! I should have known you'd work Richmond in there somehow . . . we're evaluating a lot of options for race locations and it will partly depend on sponsorship backing and some other things. Regardless, I'm hoping do the December diet you mentioned . . .

I've done a lot of great races and this is one to remember! I always hope to experience something new as far as adventure is concerned and paddling in the middle of the night with my boat lit up like a xmas theme headed towards some dark blobs was amazing! The old man who moved the cp off his property via 'the shotgun' put the cherry on top.

-The December Diet planning is already in works and should be more good times to be had. contact coylejg@vcu.edu

Thanks for a Great Race!
