The G-Rant : Grant's Rants on Adventure Racing

“Without adventure, civilization is in full decay.” - Alfred North Whitehead

Why do you race?

The TrailBlazers forum turned me on to this interview with Marshall Ulrich in the Raleigh newspaper; who has competed in all 9 eco-challenges and is known for his passion for ultra running.  His full website lists all his accomplishments -- makes me feel pretty puny by comparison!

I thought this exchange from the interview was interesting:

Q: Would you recommend adventure racing to anyone else?

A: I've never been asked that, that's tough. No, I wouldn't.
You'll have to read the interview to get his full explanation, but I think (fortunately for me) my motivations with AR are very different than his.  Adventure racing combines a lot of the things I really enjoy doing and, with the right team, it's the best way to spend a day or two (and I'll let you know how I feel about 3+ days after the October race we're doing); you learn more about yourself through AR than in any other sport.

Why? Life is boring without pushing past the norm. Plus, training is a great way to stay in shape. For some of us that shape is round, hint hint.

Ok, I'll admit it. I race because I like dressing up in tight shorts to run through large patches of thorns just to pick up a few bugs on the way to a flag that means nothing other than I'm one CP closer to a nice shower and a good night of sleep. Oh, I forgot to mention right before going to sleep I would consume one of the largest bowls of ice cream known to man just to become round again. Isn't that why they call it the circle of life?

Funny Eric; you know I'm a big fan of the ice cream myself.  Maybe they'll have some of that after the Powhatan Trail Race in May?

The course testers for the 2005 TT raced the course on a very hot day and one of the things we had for them in the transition area was ice cream bars . . . and they gladly ate them between a trek and a bike leg!  Maybe I should start adding ice cream to my mid-race nutrition plan!?

I had read that article before I saw this post, and was a bit troubled/surprised by the answer Marshall gave to that question...he seemed to indicate that anyone who decides to take up adventure racing is a troubled person and has some "problem" in their head that they are trying to cure by adventure racing. I am also very glad that my motivations for adventure racing are far different from his!

Pretty much we race b/c the cool gear.  We usually like the training aspect of AR as well.  So, i should include team Walter, Donny, and the Dude's training schedule.  For example, last year we did the STORM in November.  We took a rest period after the race til about March 20th, then trained, then raced on april 1st.  Coincidentally we never get to paddle except in the actual races.  Ive been in a canoe three times other than HRadventure races and another teammate has only been in one while in the races (the STORM was his first time!).  So, we race cause we love the stuff  you need to race, the long arduous training that we do, and the cameraderie of our team when we yell at each other for tipping the canoe too much.  Thats why i/we race.  Congrats Grant, by the way, for the blog making the Navigation Games appearance.  Nice work.
