The G-Rant : Grant's Rants on Adventure Racing

A 2nd STORM Race Reort

The "Fighting Nutrias" did their first adventure race this past weekend, and they shared their experience online here.  If you're wondering what a nutria is, check out this fact sheet and photo; there have been some rumours that teams encountered some real live nutrias during the race, but I have never seen any on the Eastern Shore.

I didn't think there were nutrias as far north as the ES either.  I had only seen them in Nags Head.  But to my surprise, the link says that they have been now been reported in every Maryland Eastern Shore County.  I guess they are making the move north.

Whatever it is I saw, it was hairy and ugly.  I tried to block out the idea of living water creatures though, considering that I was more than waist deep in muddy water.  But, at the time I remember shouting out "ew" to my teammate, who responded "Chris, this is adventure racing.  You can't say ew."  I think that comment will definately go down as one in the books.  Needless to say, I quickly learned to block out any thoughts of disgusting bugs and live animals, and move on.  Funny...a year ago if someone would have told me I would be doing this and love it, I would have told them they were out of their mind.

We often say: "By the time you cross the finish line of a good race, you'll have become a different person from the one who started the race."

Hopefully a better person, but unavoidably a different one!

Oh man.. I am SOO jealous!  The closest I came to seeing a nutria out there was a tuft of my teammate Bob's back hair sticking out of his shirt sleeve!   Talk about scary!

Hey Grant-  looks like you and the Nutrias have a lot in common.  You both eat about 25 percent of your bodyweight daily......

Ouch!

Ever hear of the Donner Party?  We might get snowbound in the La Sal mountains of Utah and resort to drastic measures to stay alive!

Well out of our whole team you certainly are carrying the most eatable weight.  Better watch out, Yon Mojo has a lean and hungry look.......
