Adventure Racing Is Not A Crime and the Virginia Beach AdventureFest

What a gorgeous day for the off-road duathlon (in Williamsburg) and orienteering meet (in Richmond)!  Let's cross our trekking poles and hope for a nice batch of weather for the Virginia Beach AdventureFest next weekend.  Right now Saturday looks fine (high of 70, low of 60) and Sunday isn't too shabby either.

Speaking of which, we've go a lot of things going on in VBAdventureFest land:
  • -Pike (short for Pam & Mike) have posted a map of the Bear of the Beach Trail Run.  Still time to get into this 5 mile run on Nov 12, by the way; you can register online here.  This is Ft. Story's first trail run ever so the area should be new to most everyone (unless we run the adventure race over it . . . I'll leave it at that):

  • -Virginia Beach AdventureFest has released the official guide; download it, print it, and spend lots of time reading it instead of doing "real" work.  The tents start going up at the oceanfront around noon and things open in earnest at 4 PM on Friday.
  • -We've posted the final racer communication for the the Sea & Sand Adventure Race.  This is going to be a really fun race to end the 2006 Series with.
  • -You may have heard that we ran into some permitting challenges along the way with the  adventure race on Saturday . . . the good news is that the course is better than ever and you still get to rappel off the hotel roof if you want to.  Better still, I finally found an excuse to produce the shirt I've always dreamed of:
    • -We're considering it a limited edition VBAdventureFest special; you can get yours for $25 while supplies last at the VBAF starting Friday evening.  Listening to Rage Against The Machine while you wear the shirt is suggested, but not required.
Remember, if you're late to the party, it's not too late to . . .

No, the shirts are cotton.  I didn't like the cost and limited choices for a wicking alternative (to do 'wicking' right we'd probably source the shirts ourselves through Blue Ridge Mountain Sports).

We've got a lot going on this week so we plan to just sell them first-come, first-serve starting Friday at 4 PM.

The Kraken Challenge shirts are wicking, however.

Looking at the roster, there are 8-10 teams that can win the Coed 3-4. That is some crazy competition! Can't wait to hear the stories at Saturday's awards/party. I've called Grant's first round.

I'd love to see a cabal of for-profit and non-profit organizations raise money - perhaps by selling T-shirts with a message akin to "Permit Us to Use Our Parks" - that could go towards a legal fund to help both short-term and long-term access and permitting issues for adventure racing disciplines.
And I don't (usually) government staff for being the problem; they are caught trying to do the impossible of enforcing regulations while minimizing liability to zero with stressed staff and ever-shrinking budgets. But to turn this around will require legal muscle. Anyone know of law firms who might be great at dealing with access issues?

Grant.. I'm curious where exactly the breakdown was with the city.  I live in Virginia Beach and have a bunch of people who would like to write letters to city council (myself included).

Greg: good points, I know some places that have the attitude that "the fewer people who come here, the fewer potential problems I'll have."  I think public action and building awareness can be more effective (and certainly less expensive) than legal action, plus I'd prefer to win people over instead of beat them to death in court.  I've also not been at this as long as the QOC so I may be naive.

Bob, we'll have more to share after the Sea & Sand race but we don't want to spoil the course or anything.  Honestly, the City of VB has had some bad experiences in the past so we're part of a gradual effort to help them understand what we're about.  The VBAdventureFest is a great vehicle for accomplishing this kind of change since most recognize the potential of an annual adventure-themed festival.

There are many in City leadership positions who are watching this coming weekend closely and we're setting the stage for a long term relationship.
