The G-Rant : Grant's Rants on Adventure Racing

“Without adventure, civilization is in full decay.” - Alfred North Whitehead

Zermatt

The calves are stiff today, we did a lot of hiking and celebrating (wine drinking) -- I didn't do any stretching or watch my nutrition and recovery so I'm paying for it today.  Whine whine whine, I'm sure you're thinking.  I'll just get straight to the photos then:

Jill and I at the spine of Europe (no, that's not an artificial backdrop):

Here I was thinking about work, laundry, and chores around the house I need to do:

I love this photo for some reason . . . the view from the ridge was just astounding and Jill and I were laughing about how gorgeous it was.  You can't stop and take a picture every minute, but I was tempted!

I'll end with a picture I took from our dinner table on Friday night (that's the Matterhorn in the sunset).  The shot belongs in a coffee table book or something more worthy than my weblog!

Here is a link to all the shots I uploaded from Zermatt.

Funny Britt!  You guys should come check it out!

I'm actually loading up another 30 or so pics from the weekend based on Jill's insistence . . . you can check the Flickr site in an hour or so for some more 0% humidity and 60 degree days in the Alps!

Where is the pic from the top of the Matterhorn looking down on the town?  ;-)

I'd chose Pocahontas State Park with 100+ chiggers and ticks over that any day...  I guess I need more bug spray next time though... (as I scratch my legs...)

Yah, so we didn't climb the Matterhorn ($$$ and time for acclimatization).  I didn't even bring climbing equipment on that trip but I'll know better next time.  There are via ferratas on the cliff walls above the town that you can just take yourself on, for example!

I could live forever without seeing another Virginia chigger.

You and Jill are such a cute couple.

And those views are ridiculous.

Grant,  I picked up about 10 chiggers or so for you last week riding mtn bike marathon.  I'd be happy to ship them over if you'd like.

Morgan, I got your ten and raise you 100! I too was torn up by the prolific VA Chigger last weekend at Pocahontas SP. I am going to wear some serious death to bugs kinda stuff next time. As Mark Ross described it, " if I had a wire brush, I'd be taking my skin off right now."

I'd guess I have over 400 bites on my legs from chiggers (from Pocahontas of course).  I'm in pain!!!  I'd post pictures, but it would make everyone sick.  I have a very large concentration of bites behind both knees and around my ankles...  A flame thrower should have been mandatory gear for the night training event to clear the way in front of you...  Sorry to hear I'm not the only one that got a lot of bites.  Pat got off easy with only about 50 or so.

Ok, I may scare everyone but I have only a few chigger bites (10-15). I did have 4-6 ticks get on me during the course setting. To make you even madder, I didn't have bug spray on for 90% of the course setting.

There is a good thread going on about the PSP chigger problem on a local cycling website (cyclingcentralva.org). DEET before & duct tape after seem to be the best solution. DEET actually kills chiggers on contact. Duct tape is great to remove chiggers if you forgot DEET.

Don't worry, the next PSP night nav will be in cooler weather.

Grant, those pictures seem so fake! You've gotten really good with your CGI graphics generation. All of those pictures make me want to take an fall trip to Europe.

If I was that good with graphics, I'd be working for Pixar.  Mother nature is responsible for those photos . . . and a great digital camera.  Thanks to all those who helped get me that camera, by the way.

Fall trips to Europe for everyone!  It'd be nice to talk with some native English speakers for a change.

Everytime I see those pictures I think Pixar or Dreamworks created them.

May be in the Fall of '08.
